Why Not Glow-in-the-Dark Trees?

In the above video interview from Dezeenself-described designer/artist/architect Daan Roosegaarde describes his latest endeavor: replacing streetlights with genetically engineered glowing trees. A small early prototype was created by merging the DNA of bioluminescent underwater bacteria with that of a houseplant. “When you have a jellyfish, deep, deep underwater, it creates its own light,” he says. “Its does not have a battery, or a solar panel, or an energy bill. It does that completely autonomously. What can we learn from that?” He’s currently working on a bigger version that might one day replace the flickering bulb at the end of your block. Watch the interview above.
