Governor Cuomo Signs Bill Banning Tattooing Or Piercing Animals

December 16, 2014 | Rhett Jones

Governor Andrew Cuomo officially signed legislation that bans the ridiculous and cruel practice of tattooing and piercing pets. The bill was passed by state lawmakers earlier this summer and it is now officially a law. Governor Cuomo had this to say:

This is animal abuse, pure and simple. I’m proud to sign this common-sense legislation and end these cruel and unacceptable practices in New York once and for all.

Yes this is common sense. No ,a dog doesn’t think it’s cute to be stabbed by a needle 15,000 (!) times per minute. No, a cat doesn’t think it’s cute to be a “goth kitty” with a pierced neck and spine.

According to a press release, the bill still allows limited instances of tattooing and piercing:

Ear tags for rabbits, tattoos for identification purposes or a piercing that provides a medical benefit to the animal and is performed by or under the supervision of a veterinarian.
