Listen In: Juan Wauters Made You a Playlist

January 14, 2014 | Andy Cush

Listen In“ is a weekly feature in which we ask musicians to curate a mixtape-length YouTube playlist of songs they’re currently digging.

Today’s list comes from Juan Wauters, former frontman of New York City garage rock stalwarts The Beets. Wauters draws heavily from Latin American music of the 1960s and 1970s, including several tunes — like Jaime Roos’s “Una vez más” and Los Shakers’s “Siempre tú,” — from Uruguay, the country where Wauters was born. Jan Terri’s “Losing You,” a surreal slice of outsider pop from the early 1990s, makes its improbable second appearance on a Listen In as well (the first time, Connan Mockasin picked it). Click the big play button above to hear the whole playlist or scroll down to see and hear individual tracks.

N.A.P. North American Poetry, Juan Wauters’ forthcoming solo album, arrives February 4 via Captured Tracks.
