Where Do New New Yorkers Come From?

April 3, 2014 | Andy Cush

Tens of thousands of people move to NYC ever year. Between July 2012 and July 2013, in fact, there were 61,000 new New Yorkers. Where are all those people coming from?

According to data from Spokeo, an online database of phone numbers, they’re mostly from Connecticut and Washington, D.C. The company used area codes to determine the origins of people moving to the city, on the logic that people tend to keep their original mobile phone number when they move.

The company compiled data for both the states and specific cities driving people to the five boroughs. New Jersey topped the states list, with 27.5 percent of new residents, and Connecticut wasn’t far behind, with 14 percent. The cities list paints a different picture, with D.C., San Francisco, and Los Angeles taking the top three spots. See the full results here.
