Grand Central Is NYC’s Gropiest Subway Station

June 23, 2014 | Bucky Turco

According to the Daily News, Grand Central is a magnet for perverts and ranks number one in creepiness:

Straphangers throughout the city reported being the victim of creeps bumping, grinding, groping, flashing and assaulting them more than 3,000 times over a five-year period — and Grand Central Station is the epicenter of subway sleaze, an unprecedented Daily News analysis of subway crime data revealed.

The NYPD recorded 369 misdemeanor sex crimes and eight felony sex crimes at the century-old transit hub, or on trains approaching it, from July 2008 through June 2013 — the highest reported tally for sex crimes at any station in the system during that time.

This sordid behavior, which is prevalent during rush hour when the trains are most crowded, also extends south along the Lexington Avenue line, with 14th Street/Union Square station taking second place, tallying 172 sex crimes. Other places to avoid: Times Square/42nd Street with 109 and Forest Hills/71st Avenue in Queens with 103.

In 2008, the MTA launched a PSA urging victims to tell authorities about any inappropriate conduct such as groping or grinding. To this day, the following announcement can be heard crackling over the PA system: “Sexual Harassment is a Crime in the subway, too – A crowded train is no excuse for an improper touch. Don’t stand for it or feel ashamed, or be afraid to speak up. Report it to an MTA employee or police officer.”
