Pigs Will Taste Like Whiskey, Maybe

May 12, 2014 | Sophie Weiner

The Templeton Rye Distillery in Iowa is trying to raise pigs that taste like whiskey. Don’t get too upset (or excited). This isn’t some crazy genetic engineering. The pigs won’t even get drunk. The speculative project basically involves feeding the pigs whiskey-making ingredients and hoping for the best. The Spirit Business reports:

The pigs will not be exposed to any whisky, but will be eating a distinct diet that includes the dry distillery grain from the whisky-making process within the feed.

It doesn’t really make any scientific or culinary sense, unless the pigs are stuffed with intense amounts of whiskey ingredients and then forced to internally ferment it. But they do have an animal scientist on the case, so at least the pigs will be healthy — before they are slaughtered and turned into novelty meat products.

In related PR stunts, those weed-fed pigs never even got high. (Photo: @goosegrease, edited)
