Poll: New Yorkers Disagree With Eric Garner Grand Jury…And Protests Against Eric Garner Grand Jury

December 18, 2014 | Bucky Turco

According to a recent Quinnipiac University Poll, New Yorkers are a funny bunch. While 67% of New York City voters agree that the grand jury fucked up the Eric Garner case, 57% of those same voters aren’t cool with demonstrators protesting that bad decision in the streets. Only 34% think blocking traffic is okay.

Some of the other poll results:

Most New Yorkers, 64%, said they wanted to see the federal government bring civil rights charges against Officer Daniel Pantaleo, the officer who placed Mr. Garner in an apparent chokehold during an arrest last July. Mr Garner died in the hospital later that day. And 29% of New York City voters said they didn’t approve of the federal government bringing charges in the case.

The poll found support for New York Police Commissioner William Bratton declined. His job approval rating fell to 44% from 47% in November. His disapproval rating rose from 35% in November to 39% this month.

The takeaway: Injustice sucks, but getting stuck in traffic is too inconvenient to justify people exercising their First Amendment rights.
