Beloved late New York artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, will have a new exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum this spring, featuring rarely seen notebooks.

The museum will be displaying 160 unbound notebook pages and 30 related paintings, drawings and mixed media works, all of which come from private collections and Basquiat’s estate.

The famous neo-expressionist painter first came to attention on the streets of NYC under his graffiti-name SAMO©. After dying far too early at the age of 27, he’s been the art world equivalent of Kurt Cobain, becoming something of a martyr and inspiration for films and t-shirts. In recent years, rare items involving the artist have become highly sought after. His paintings go for as much as $27 million.

If you’ve only known his work through what he might’ve called, “SAMO© … 4 MASS MEDIA MINDWASH,” this exhibition should be a nice way to go straight to the man himself. (Photo: Laser Burners)
