Sega Is Turning Its Games Into Movies Now — Here Are The Ones We Want To See

December 12, 2014 | Rhett Jones

Sega has announced its plans to begin turning its games into full fledged feature films, TV shows and digital series through it’s production arm Stories International. Titles that have been mentioned for the motion picture treatment include Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Virtua Fighter and Crazy Taxi. While Altered Beast could be cool, Virtua Fighter just reminds us how bad Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat movies have been.

The cell-shaded, super-fast rollerblading game in which you grind through the city spraying graffiti everywhere would make a nice pseudo-sci-fi flick — something like Hackers where the titular skaters have to evade authorities and save the world. Put the Wachowski siblings on this one.

shenmue-3

Shenmue

Shenmue is practically a movie already. The game is heavy on story and exploration, but probably most famous for the fact that you have to punch in and out of work as forklift operator, handling the daily grind of moving boxes around. This will be Sega’s art house debut. Shenmue will still get in fights and investigate, but his daily routine will take up just as much time. Gotta go with The Grandmaster and Chungking Express director, Wong Kar-Wai — he’ll shoot it beautifully, he can do fight scenes and give it that necessary philosophical veneer.

Space-Harrier-1

Space Harrier

Ok, typical space opera movie where our hero pilots rocket pack and shoots shit. Tom Cruise is the star and he can reunite with his Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman. That’s it: space, rocket packs, blowing shit up.

This game was awesome. We need a script by Game of Thrones writer George R.R. Martin. People riding dragons, burning enemies and all the sorts of dramatic intrigue that GOT does so well but set on a post-apocalyptic planet. Guillermo del Toro, the Pacific Rim guy, can direct.

Ninjas are cool. Where are the ninja movies? We want ninjas. No, the turtle kind don’t count. We need the stealthy ninja types; throwing smoke bombs and sneaking through the shadows. Get the guy who directed The Raid on it and RZA can have a bit part because ninja movies deserve RZA as much as kung fu movies do.
