Trailer for Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, the Film He’s Been Making for 12 Years

April 25, 2014 | Andy Cush

In 2002, when Richard Linklater began making Boyhood, Ellar Coltrane was seven years old. Over the next 12 years, Linklater crafted a coming-of-age film with Coltrane at the center; by the time they were finished, Coltrane was a young man and so was his character. The trailer, released today, will probably make you tear up.

This isn’t the first time Linklater has devoted long stretches of real-world time to telling a story. His Before Sunrise trilogy, told the story of a couple over 18 years, with nine years between the shooting of each film. The last installment, Before Midnight, was released last year.

Boyhood debuted at Sundance and will see theatrical release this summer.
