As part their local filmmaker series, Rhett Jones’ The Villains is screening this evening at Videology in Williamsburg.
Earlier this year, ANIMAL profiled the independent film inspired by the proliferation of DIY media and Jean-Luc Godard’s La Chinoise, with Marshall McLuhan theory standing in for ideologies of Mao.
A group of students form a political micro-collective in their shared apartment. They are on a mission to utilize the internet and new media tools to coordinate empowerment of the masses, personal engagement and direct democracy… Ultimately, it surveys ideologies of political change, revolution, violence and communal relationships through well-intentioned, but flawed characters.
Tonight’s multi-projection screening of The Villains will incorporate the search engine generated sequences of related YouTube clips, which will be randomly auto-selected by a pre-programmed algorithm based on timed, scene-topical keywords. Each viewing is unique. This will be the first time the film is presented live in a generative format.
