About five and a half million people ride the subway on an average weekday. These people lose a lot of stuff. When a lost item is retrieved by an MTA employee, it’s added to a list that’s published online and updated hourly. Using this data, FiveThirtyEight created infographics of the most common and strangest items on the list.
Unsurprisingly, cell phones top the list of the most frequently lost items, followed by Metrocards and wallets.
Some of the stranger (and strangely common) finds currently held by the MTA include 96 X-Ray print outs, 19 death certificates and 61 pagers lost by apparent time travelers.
ANIMAL recently followed MTA employees responsible for retrieving the diverse array of items commuters drop into the train tracks. They found a dirty stuffed bunny.
