Zoom In: Inside the Abandoned Bowery Station

April 4, 2014 | Aymann Ismail

The Bowery station for the J/Z lines has been open for over a century, but since about 2004, a ghost-like set of platforms and tracks have been completely shuttered to the public. When graffiti started accumulating, the area was cordoned off with plywood, killing the chances of seeing even a glimpse of what was going up on the other side the boarded-off, neglected stretch of transit property. Although there was lots of tags, it wasn’t nearly as bombed as one would expect, which is due to the MTA buffing most of the work last summer. But there were some newly-painted pieces by the likes of SABIO and PIXOTE. See them in the gallery above and check back every Friday for a new photo essay. (Photos: Aymann Ismail/ANIMALNewYork)
