Game Of Thrones Mixtape Catch the Throne, Volume II Is Better Than It Should Be

March 17, 2015 | Liam Mathews

On Tuesday, HBO released Catch the Throne, Volume II to promote the upcoming 5th season of Game of Thrones, which premieres April 12. It features new songs from Snoop Dogg, Ty Dolla $ign, Anthrax and many other rap, metal, reggaeton and pop artists; as well as a previously shared power ballad by Mastodon called “White Walker.”

The mixtape opens with a new Method Man song called “The Oath,” where the erstwhile Cheese Wagstaff raps about joining the Night’s Watch. Method Man is no stranger to sponsored content, having rapped from the perspective of the Riddler in 1995 to promote Batman Forever, before ‘sponsored content’ even existed.

Talib Kweli makes a political stand for the people of Fleabottom. Snoop Dogg, in “Lannister’s Anthem” (the worst song on the mixtape), emphasizes the W in “sword” like he’s in the Wu-Tang Clan and raps “blood in the streets, incest, laying with your blood the sheets.” The MNDR song is legitimately very good.

The whole thing is genuinely entertaining and not embarrassing. Good job, HBO.
