Lawmaker Wants NYPD To Make Its Patrol Guide Public

As it stands, you pretty much have to dig through the trash, as ANIMAL did, to find the set of rules patrolling officers are meant to obey while on duty. But one lawmaker wants to change that.

The New York Daily News reports that Councilman Dan Garodnick (D-Manhattan) will be introducing legislation that requires the police to make its patrol guide — the document that tells officers how to behave while on duty and what procedures they need to follow to stop people — publicly available.

“People deserve to understand what the rules are governing police officers,” Garodnick said, explaining that the lack of transparency leads to public misconceptions and confusion about how law enforcement is supposed to behave. “This shouldn’t be shrouded in secrecy.”
