Meet New York’s “Pigeon Mumblers”

March 20, 2015 | Bucky Turco

Here at ANIMAL we’re a big fan of all things pigeon and so we were delighted to see a new short about the city’s most ubiquitous bird by filmmaker JJ Sulin. He said it was curiosity that initially prompted him to make the brief documentary. After reading about “pigeon flying in NYC,” Sulin asked his pigeon keeper neighbor about the animals and he gave him the full rundown, including introductions to fellow “pigeon mumblers.” He then profiled them all and gives a glimpse of what it’s like to care and raise these birds in the Bronx, Staten Island and Brooklyn, where there’s a pet store in Bushwick that still sells pigeons.
