Phase One of the Second Avenue Subway Is “82%” Finished

May 22, 2015 | Liam Mathews

The MTA gave reporters a tour of the under-construction Second Avenue Subway on Thursday, showing off the pristine cement platforms and trackbeds of the nearly complete new stations. MTA head of capital construction Michael Horodniceanu told amNY that the 63rd Street station is 85% completed, and the entire first phase of the construction, extending the Q train from 53rd Street to 96th Street, is 82% done. Horodniceanu is 75% to 80% confident that the line will open in December 2016 (I’m 64% to 87% confident that Michael Horodniceanu is pulling numbers out of his ass to seem authoritative).

The MTA hopes to begin phase 2 in 2019 if they can secure funding. Phases 3 and 4 are still unfunded and theoretical.
