The NYPD Spent a Crazy Amount of Money on Shrooms

April 6, 2015 | Liam Mathews

Guess how much money the NYPD spent on psilocybin mushrooms? (Nope, guess higher).

The answer: $13,368, according to DNAinfo. The NYPD bought all these hallucinogenics back in 2011 so the drug testing lab would have samples to compare against mushrooms seized from dealers. The NYPD also bought a bunch of MDMA, which they probably still call ecstasy.

They didn’t buy the samples from some dude named Caleb in front of Madison Square Garden before the Phish show, though; they ordered them from a chemical company called Sigma-Aldrich and a supplies firm called Pina M.

ANIMAL sources say that the current market rate for shrooms in New York is around $300 an ounce.

The NYPD figures come from a review of spending records obtained by DNAinfo. Other somewhat odd purchases include shoeshine machines, jet skis and steak dinners.
