Towers of Power: 36 Female Artists Personalize Mini Water Towers

June 12, 2015 | Aymann Ismail

As part of an all-female group show curated by graffiti-trained-artist CLAW, thirty-six women recently customized mini-water towers. Each artist, including CLAW, was given a blank wood-like tower by Boundless Brooklyn, a company that sells DIY models of various objects symbolizing NYC. They were then asked to portray “Whatever feminism means to you.” The scaled-down structures are on on display (and for sale) at the MoMA design store through June 18.

To CLAW, the show was a way to promote women artists, specifically. “The art world is not very receptive to female artists therefore it is a feminist assertion to merely show our art regardless of that obstacle,” she said. “Each art piece then becomes even more impactful after contextualizing as a statement directly addressing feminism.”

Towers of Power includes work by 179, Ashley Olan, Aquarela Sabol, Danielle Mastrion, Danielle Vanacore, Deb, Diana Contreras, Doña, Elle, Erotica 67, Gilf, Haley Wollens, Jade Jones, Kazilla, Klor 123Klan, Lex, Lexi Bella, Lora Baize, Marthalicia, MC Baldassari, Merlot, Mickey, Miss 17, Mrs, Murrz, Nilla Bands, NM Salagar, Panmela Castro, Pia Phelps, Reina Mia Brill, Tash One, Utah, Zera, and Zukie.
