August 14, 2013 | Marina Galperina

As the city of Detroit files for bankruptcy, New York-based auction house Christie’s has been sent to appraise the Detroit Institute of Arts’ collection. Christie’s being paid $200,000 just for the estimate…

We picked just a few pieces from DIA’s Contemporary Art collection, like the little shoes by Yayoi Kusama who recently had a retrospective at the Whitney and Arman’s rotary phone sculpture. And Claus Oldenburg’a alphabet-based sculptures! Look at those stacked fat fonts.

To learn more, read the recent stories at the Detroit Free Press and in the Detroit News. Let’s hope for the least worst, but to help, you can always become a member of the Detroit Institute of Arts.
