Artist’s Notebook:
Yoshi Sodeoka

April 8, 2013 | Marina Galperina

ANIMAL’s feature Artist’s Notebook asks artists to show us their original idea sketch next to a finished piece. This week, we talk to Yoshi Sodeoka about his gorgeous, psychedelic video project Sibyl

Since 2010, I’ve been working on this prog-rock inspired psychedelic video project called “Sibyl” with my friend Daron Murphy. I’ve been collecting a lot of freaky prog-rock album covers for inspiration. They have a lot of fairies, flowers, magicians, dragons, unicorns, giant octopuses, mutated insects, unattractive naked men and clowns. Those are very mystical to say the least.

I don’t usually sketch. I got Evernote in my head, not a very good one though. And I usually forget about bad ideas anyway, and sometime good ones too probably… But it’s all meant to be. This is just my filtration system for the stream of stupid ideas. But for this video, I did make a sketch-ish thing. I was just messing around in Photoshop with the album art and made this. And it totally helped me to get the vibe of the video I wanted to make.
