Bring the Fireworks Back to the East River Already

06.28.12 Marina Galperina

Remember 2009, when the Brooklyn and Queens got shafted by the city and the 4th of July fireworks were moved from the East River to the Hudson, so only the fancy Hudson River coast area and New Jersey could enjoy the show? And you know, not the neighborhoods from Lower East Side to Turtle Bay? It should have been a one-year hiatus, and now what’s up?

Let’s bring it back. Not only is the placement of the fireworks makes it difficult to see anything unless you’re roosted on the piers for half the day, but also the neighborhoods are robbed of the tradition and the economic benefits of the event are usurped by Jersey, it’s just not that great of a location. I mean, come on. Fireworks over the bridge! Don’t you miss that?

Meet you political cheer squad: Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, State Senator Dan Squadron, Councilmember Stephen Levin, and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. Here’s a petition. And go!
