Coming Soon: Five New J.D. Salinger Books

August 26, 2013 | Andy Cush

Yes, this is really happening. According to the New York Times and the Associated PressJ.D. Salinger, the late, famously reclusive writer, has not one, not two, but five new works coming out beginning in 2015. This is big news for the legions of people for whom The Catcher in the Rye, Franny and Zooey, and the rest of Salinger’s works virtually defined adolescence and coming-of-age.

And these aren’t just any old stories. One compilation, dubbed The Family Glass, augments with five new stories the tale of one of literature’s most beloved clans–the Glass family, who appear in the aforementioned Franny and Zooey, Nine Stories, and Raise High the Roof Beam Carpenters/Seymour, an Introduction, and inspired Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums. Another would include a new story about the Caufield family of Catcher fame.

Before you get all torn between your desire to read the new stuff and wondering whether Salinger would have wanted the works to be kept under wraps: according to Shane Salerno, director of a forthcoming film and co-writer of a forthcoming book about the writer, Salinger had plans to release all of this stuff posthumously. Everybody wins!
