A Brooklyn grand jury has indicted rookie cop Peter Liang in the fatal shooting of Akai Gurley, reports NY1. According to the New York Post, the charges include manslaughter in the second degree.

Liang and another officer were patrolling East New York’s Pink Houses on November 20 and entered the building. As Liang was opening a door, the gun he was holding with the same hand discharged and fatally shot Gurley, who was unarmed. In the following moments, Liang and his partner reportedly texted their union rep instead of seeking emergency medical help for the man. The NYPD called the gunshot an accident. Gurley’s partner sued the city for $50 million.

If convicted, Liang could face up to 15 years in prison.
