Responding to an influential report recommending an immediate end to the global war on drugs, Rafael Lemaitre, a spokesman for White House Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske, argued that decriminalization isn’t the answer, fully confirming Washington’s out-of-touchedness when it comes to illicit substances and America’s love of them.
He lays out his nonsensical argument as thus:
Drug addiction is a disease that can be successfully prevented and treated. Making drugs more available — as this report suggests — will make it harder to keep our communities healthy and safe.
If that’s true, why aren’t drugs treated as a health issue instead of a criminal one? Also, current law enforcement tactics do anything but make “our communities healthy and safe.” But don’t take my word for it, ask this former marine’s family or any of the countless other casualties of botched SWAT team raids.
