Flushing Meadows Drift

October 13, 2014 | Marina Galperina

The road and parking lot near Meadow Lake at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park has been taken over by speed racers, according to the peeved community and helpless police, reports DNAinfo. They’re riding around after dark, revving their engines, playing loud music and doing the “drift” which is “when a driver speeds up and oversteers their car, then lets their wheels spin out.”

Apparently, they’ve been doing this for years. Though it’s not clear just how many reckless driving arrests have actually been made, officers issued a whopping 170 summons for “lack of registration, being in the park after dark and excessive tints” and the like over just one weekend in August. Around 200 total summons have been issued this year, with dozens impounded.

Policing the park is “a very difficult task” and dispersing these annoying gatherings requires up to twenty officers, who could be busy doing other stuff.
