One of the founders of The Pirate Bay, Frederik Neij, has been detained in Thailand and is currently awaiting extradition to Sweden.
Neij, 32, has been on the run after being convicted of aiding copyright infringement by a Swedish court in 2009. While he was attempting to cross the border between Laos and Thailand, Neij had the unfortunate luck of wearing the exact same shirt as in the photo given to border patrols. An officer recognized him and he was placed in custody.
The Pirate Bay is the most high-profile of all BitTorrent sites and has had a remarkably long life in a field that is traditionally hobbled by authorities or beaten by competition in very short time frames. There’s no indication that the Pirate Bay will be affected by Neij’s absence and the organization frequently changes the location of its servers and its domain name.
Neij is the third and final co-founder of The Pirate Bay to be arrested. Gottfird Svartholm is currently serving a three-and-a-half year sentence and Peter Sunde should be released from an eight month sentence quite soon.
