Fully-Functional Cameras Made From Animal Corpses

April 8, 2013 | Julia Dawidowicz

After years of experimenting, Swiss duo Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs have successfully built a unique series of cameras made from the taxidermed bodies of armadillos and tortoises. And they work!

The ongoing project “Camera Collection”  investigates the physical body of a camera and the impression it leaves on the light that goes through it — the field of “photo-esoterics.” The cameras are fully functional, constructed with high precision lenses and precise optical parameters, though according to Krebs, “the results remain unseen.”

While “Camera Collection” has been received with considerably mixed reactions (including some “vegetarian hippies screaming out ‘Hitler’s Hobby!'”), the pair, who have also built cameras from books, bones, and “voodoo paraphernalia,” are anything but discouraged. They aspire to eventually build a camera that’s large enough to stand inside.
