A video report in the Global Mail examines the effects a changing Harlem have had on the neighborhood’s longtime residents. Reporters speak to two Harlemites, community worker Sarah Martin and Harlem Arts Alliance member Voza Rivers, each of whom offers a unique perspective on the neighborhood’s increasing rents and influx of white residents: Martin believes gentrification is sounding the neighborhood’s death knell, while Rivers offers a less fatalistic viewpoint. One of the most impassioned moments comes at the 2:45 mark, when Martin announces, “Here it is. Cotton has come to Harlem, and it has not stopped growing yet.”
