September 10, 2014 | Sophie Weiner

Google Street View Egypt launched a new addition this week, giving internet users around the globe access to panoramic, 360 degree views of the Great Pyramids of Giza and other historical sites. Google can now add the Cairo Citadel, the necropolis of Saqqara and the Hanging Church to their list of documented monuments, which already featured the Colosseum, Angkor Wat and the Taj Majal, among others.

Unlike the images Google takes of street sights, these off-road photos were made by “trekkers” who cary panoramic, 360 degree cameras on huge backpack rigs. This provided a challenge to both humans and equipment as they hiked the blazing Egyptian desert. As of now, Google Street View has photographed 7.2 million miles of territory around the world. (Images: Google Street View)
