Here’s Your First Look at the New Kurt Cobain Documentary

March 11, 2015 | Prachi Gupta

The trailer for the highly anticipated, critically-acclaimed HBO doc about Kurt Cobain has arrived. Rarely are two-and-a-half minute trailers as interesting as the one for Montage of Heck, which includes never-before-seen home videos and photos of the rock icon as a baby.

Director Brett Morgen got exclusive access to Cobain’s personal archive and then supplemented that footage with animations and artwork to create a full and deep profile of the troubled artist. “Once I stepped into Kurt’s archive, I discovered over 200 hours of unreleased music and audio, a vast array of art projects (oil paintings, sculptures), countless hours of never-before-seen home movies and over 4,000 pages of writings that together help paint an intimate portrait of an artist who rarely revealed himself to the media,” he told Rolling Stone.

Aiding in the documentary’s authenticity is Cobain’s daughter, Frances Bean, an executive producer on the project. The film will also be accompanied by a book (out April 7th) and a soundtrack that includes a never-before-heard 12-minute acoustic song by Cobain. Montage of Heck premieres on HBO May 4th.
