Here’s Gilbert & George’s
New High Line Billboard

September 4, 2013 | Kyle Chayka

The newest commissioned artwork for the High Line Billboard was recently unveiled. Chosen for the billboard was “Waking“, a 1984 image featuring the collaborative artist duo Gilbert & George surrounded on both sides by various young men, many of whom are wearing rather garish makeup, and are accompanied by several expressive splotches of color.

The entire stained glass inspired image was originally about thirty-six feet wide, meaning that it had to be doubled in width in order to fit the massive High Line Billboard that can be best seen from West 18th Street at 10th Avenue. “Gilbert & George: Waking,” Sep 3 – Oct 1, The High Line, Manhattan (Photo: Kyle Petreycik/ANIMALNewYork)
