Here’s What the New Rockaway Boardwalk Will Look Like

January 16, 2014 | Andy Cush

The city released renderings of the new Rockaways boardwalk this week, and they look pretty much as you’d expect. Gone is the mostly wooden construction that was demolished in Hurricane Sandy, replaced with a sleek concrete walkway. Truth told, it looks more like a sidewalk than a boardwalk, but should hold up better against future storms. There’s also going to be giant letters that spell out “Rockaway,” visible to planes flying above. And bike lanes!

The first phase, from Beach 86th to Beach 97th Streets, should be completed by summer 2015, with the rest rolling out over the following year. See the rest of the renders in the gallery, and the Parks Department’s full presentation here.

I especially like this translucent Owen Wilson carrying his surfboard.
