Hipster NBC News Claims Hipster Farmers Are Abandoning Hipster Chickens at (Hipster?) Animal Shelters

July 8, 2013 | Bucky Turco

According to NBC News–a historic American news institution since 1940–there has been a steady increase in the amount of chickens being dropped off at animal sanctuaries all across the United States. Their headline screams: “Backyard chickens dumped at shelters when hipsters can’t cope, critics say.”

Except critics never said “hipster” — only NBC News reporter JoNel Aleccia did. Here’s what they did say, however:

Paul Shapiro, Humane Society of the United States

Many areas with legalized hen-keeping are experiencing more and more of these birds coming in when they’re no longer wanted. You get some chicks and they’re very cute, but it’s not as though you can throw them out in the yard and not care for them.

Susie Coston, National Shelter Director of Farm Sanctuary

They’re put on Craigslist all the time when they don’t lay any more. They’re dumped all the time.

Mary Britton Clouse, owner of Chicken Run Rescue

It’s the stupid foodies. We’re just sick to death of it.

So to all the people who keep hens, use Craigslist and like food, you’ve been put on notice… for being “hipsters.”
