How to Make a Readymade With BHQF

September 26, 2013 | Kyle Chayka

If you’ve been following along with the Bruce High Quality Foundation’s recent contributions to MOCAtv’s YouTube channel you’ll know that they’ve already covered many of the basics, like how to properly hang a painting and how to screen-print in your bathroom. And now…

The strange thing about ready-mades is that I’ve never been able to come up with a definition or an explanation that fully satisfies me.

–Marcel Duchamp

BHQF takes on the readymade, a concept developed about one hundred years ago by Marcel Duchamp when he began selecting objects and attributing them as artworks, most notably that urinal, laid flat on its back rather than upright in its usual position and signed “R. Mutt 1917.” Some artists and creatives would say that this is the single most important artistic gesture that has happened within the past one hundred years, completely shaking up the art word in the process.

In the video above, Duchamp fan girls Ann Hirsch and Genevieve Belleveau show you a few examples of readymades and explain the everlasting impact that Duchamp’s Fountain has left on the art world as we know it. (Images: MOCAtv/Alfred Stieglitz)
