Iced Out: Touring Manhattan’s Frozen Zones By Helicopter

February 23, 2015 | Lainna Fader

My first helicopter flight, scheduled for 1:30PM on Saturday with NYonAir, was cancelled – as soon as we got to the Kearny, N.J. heliport, a heavy snowstorm rolled in. With zero visibility, we weren’t going anywhere. So NYonAir kindly rebooked us for the next day, as one member of our group had a flight to Dubai to catch. It worked out perfectly – Sunday was absolutely beautiful, clear and warm, heating up to around 40 degrees and yet, still lots of ice.

We got up around 4:30PM, and in our half-hour circle around the city, we caught spectacular views of the Statue of Liberty, One World Trade Center, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and Central Park. But perhaps the best sight was the poor sightseeing cruise ship trying to push its way through the ice formations in the Hudson River.
