Kaleidoscopic Coney Island

May 22, 2013 | Julia Dawidowicz

New York-based artist Leslie Thornton‘s new video installation Luna is more than just an immersive, three-channeled, kaleidoscopic spectacle. It’s a new form of digital storytelling, spanning the history of Coney Island from 1900 to some time in the not-too-distant future. In lieu of actors and dialogue, Luna stars the iconic Parachute Jump, whose gradual metamorphosis is witnessed through suggestive shifts in appearance and audio.

“Thornton’s project deals with the relationship between chronology, technology, mediation, and with the ‘historical’ as an artifact of the cinematic/digital image. Luna is an invocation of loss, as well as a tacit critique of nostalgia.” Luna, Leslie Thornton, May 11- June 22, Winkleman Gallery, Chelsea.
