Listen In: Parquet Courts Made You a Playlist

June 3, 2014 | Andy Cush

Listen In“ is a weekly feature in which we ask musicians to curate a mixtape-length YouTube playlist of songs they’re currently digging.

Sunbathing Animal, Parquet Courts’ new album, refines the Brooklyn band’s post-punk squall, slowing down and stretching out without sacrificing the energy that made their last two records so compelling. The approach works: “Instant Disassembly,” a seven-minute slow burn, hits you in the chest like nothing else in the band’s catalog, despite being among the quietest songs they’ve ever written.

Frontman Andrew Savage compiled a “Listen In” playlist that displays no such restraint. Aside from one detour into melancholy country-folk by way of Townes Van Zandt, it’s all art-damaged new wave and punk. Bands like The Dead C, Sparks, and Devo show up, with Meat Loaf’s 1981 rave-up “Dead Ringer for Love” closing things out in appropriately tongue-in-cheek fashion.
