Listen In: Rich Aucoin Made You A Playlist

August 12, 2014 | Sophie Weiner

Listen In” is a weekly feature in which we ask musicians to curate a mixtape-length YouTube playlist of songs they’re currently digging. Click the big play button above to hear the whole playlist or scroll down to see and hear individual tracks.

Rich Aucoin deserves to make it big. The Canadian artist invokes the deranged gleefulness of Dan Deacon and has the hyperactive multi-media live shows to match. His past work interwove cathartic chants with light pop compositions. Like his friends Terror Pigeon (who are seen here in a crowd screaming “WE’RE GONNA MAKE IT THROUGH ALL THE SHIT” wearing stuffed animal suits), Aucoin thrives off unbridled weirdness, though the results feel strangely controlled. Here, he’s picked out a nice selection of fellow oddities, including a classic by so-hot-right-now “Weird” Al, and John Cage playing a cacti. What’s not to love?

Rich Aucoin’s new album Ephemeral is out September 9th. He’ll be performing at Glasslands in Williamsburg on September 23rd.
