Listen In: Truthers Made You A Playlist

July 1, 2014 | Sophie Weiner

Listen In“ is a weekly feature in which we ask musicians to curate a mixtape-length YouTube playlist of songs they’re currently digging. Click the big play button above to hear the whole playlist or scroll down to see and hear individual tracks.

Truthers are a new Brooklyn band, perhaps supergroup, made up of members of the bands Diiv, Phone Tag and Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk. They formed amid the ruins of Market Hotel, the shut down Bushwick venue where they lived with other artists and musicians for years. The band may only have one track out to date, but it’s a good representation of their off-kilter psychobilly pop attitude and deftness with melody, as well as their energetic live performances. Truthers selected an incredibly weird playlist of musical theater songs, obscure tracks by famous bands and some stuff that isn’t even music, including The B52’s, Os Mutantes, Aphex Twin, The Beach Boys and a highly unsettling intro by Charles Manson. It’s the perfect accompaniment for a tripped-out summer day that you’re not afraid to make even stranger, and it will tide you over while we wait to hear more from this promising group.
