Mars Bar Will Be Unrecognizable When It Returns

May 13, 2014 | Andy Cush

When news surfaced that Mars Bar might reopen at its old East Village address, it was already apparent that it might return a shadow of its former self. Now, we know the whole, ugly truth: they’ll be serving quinoa and fresh-squeezed juice.

The new Mars Bar — and it will still be called Mars Bar — will occupy two floors at 21 First Street, with a lounge in the basement and a juice bar on the ground floor. In addition to the aforementioned quinoa, it will also offer “salads, sandwiches, meats and cheeses,” DNAinfo reports.

“I miss the old times, but you can’t be the same way no more,” Frank Penza, Mars Bar’s 81-year-old original owner, said earlier this month. “There’s a lot of money invested.”

No word yet on when the reborn bar will open.
