Mayoral Hopeful Bill de Blasio Arrested Protesting Hospital Closures

July 11, 2013 | Andy Cush

Mayoral candidate and current NYC Public Advocate Bill de Blasio was arrested yesterday. But don’t worry too much–that was his plan all along. De Blasio was part of a crowd of protesters demonstrating against the potential closure of Long Island College Hospital and Interfaith Medical Center, and was cuffed along with City Councilman Steve Levin after refusing to leave the sidewalk in front of the State University of New York Chancellor’s office in Midtown (SUNY bought LICH in 2011).

According to Politicker, when Comptroller John Liu, also a mayoral hopeful and also at the protest, said to de Blasio “I heard you’re going to get cuffed today,” de Blasio “merely smiled.”

De Blasio was arrested for disorderly conduct and released later that afternoon. See video of the incident above.
