Meta Graffiti: RD Tag on Banksy Fire Hydrant

10.17.13 Bucky Turco

While some writers have outright destroyed the public art Banksy has been putting on the streets of NYC as part of his ongoing “artist residency,” others have made more interesting alterations to his work, like this RD tag on the street artist’s stenciled fire hydrant. It’s funny, cause it’s what RD does nowadays.

Over the past few years, lots of RD tags started popping up on hydrants all over the city–which is pretty smart, as they’re not the type of street objects that get buffed regularly. For those unfamiliar with RD, he’s a NYC bombing legend whose two letter tag quickly became a ubiquitous mark on the city streets during the 80s and 90s. It was everywhere, including over lots of other writers, as he was notorious for crossing people out.

Unlike OMAR’s fame-seeking handiwork, RD legitimates this Banksy piece, so there’s no need to restore it.
