Minimalist Film Reviews: Boyhood

Boyhood (2014)

The same lead actor, filmedヾ(。◕ฺ∀◕ฺ)ノ for 12 years ヽ(^。^)丿wow –– a total of 39 days. From dir. Richard Linklater (Dazed And Confused, Waking Life, Before Sunrise), now there’s a phenomenal midly eventful steady bildungsroman that makes you notice every nuance of boy-II-man(ish)-hood, from dirt and bugs to the trauma of your first haircut via the overbearing authority of an alcoholic step-father to thank god I made it freshman year, fuck all y’all!

HOW MUCH YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT TECHNIQUE BUT SHOULDN’T:
4.5 out of 5.0

Yes. It all came together. But please don’t spend the entire movie cumming over how seamless it is or you’ll miss the movie. Real life is happening, damn it. Very general things, but in poignant ways. (But that jump cut across 11 months to the precise moment the kid finds his mom wailing face-down into the floor of a garage tho.) Yeah, don’t do that.

“TEXAS” TEXAS: 2.? out of 5.0

Except for 2-3 “gay” jokes from the extended family and moron teenagers, I learned a lot of unexpected things about Texas. Texas isn’t “Texas.” Texas is life, with people in it, people on a journey, on the journey of life. But get as far away from home as possible, even if you still have to stay in Texas.

NATURAL TIMESTAMPS: 3.5 out of 5.0

There’s a great chronology tethered by deliberate close-ups of whatever video game gadgetry the kid’s got this year, how Bush is fucking shit up (via Ethan Hawke’s part time dad rants) and of course, in the score punching you with one of the most popular songs of each year. Where were you when #triggerwarning it was all yellow?
