New Map of Suicide Rates By Country

September 11, 2014 | Sophie Weiner

In 2012, suicide was the second biggest cause of death for people aged 15 to 29 worldwide. A recent study from the World Health Organization provided comparative suicide rates by country. Those with the most suicides per 100,000 people included Russia and surrounding countries, North Korea, India and Japan.

More than 800,000 people committed suicide in 2012, according to the WHO report.  A suicide occurs every 40 seconds around the world, and “suicides account for 50% of all violent deaths in men and 71% in women.” In 2012, three-fourths of all suicides happened in countries in the low and middle income brackets.

Based in the Kingdom of Denmark, the WHO omits date for Greenland, where suicide has been an increasingly serious problem in recent years. Data has shown 1 in 5 people attempt suicide in the Arctic country. (Photo: Wikipedia)
