New Zoo Will Let You Bike And Fly Among Animals In A Reflective Shell

August 7, 2014 | Sophie Weiner

Danish architectural group BIG has proposed an unusual design for “Zootopia,” which will replace the current zoo in Givskud, Denmark. Their concept is to hide humans from the animals, while allowing a more interactive and intimate viewing experience than is usually available to zoo goers.

Zootopia will have three areas — representing Asia, Africa and “America.” A four mile underground hiking path will loop through all three zones with hidden viewing areas. Bikes, boats and aerial trams inside mirrored pods will allow visitors to ride among the animals without interfering noticeably with their surroundings. There will also be a car route around the zoo’s perimeter.

“It is our dream – with Giskud,” the planners write, “to create the best and freest possible environment for the animals lives and relationships with each other and visitors.” Zootopia will be completed in 2019. (Images: BIG)
