Is the Media Chasing the 'Russert Rainbow'?
Yesterday, a rainbow—"an optical and meteorological phenomena that cause a spectrum of light to appear in the sky when the Sun shines onto droplets of moisture in the Earth's atmosphere"—appeared over D.C. right around the ending of the memorial service for news saint Timothy John Russert. But this wasn't some natural weather event according to Keith Olbermann on his Countdown show, it was surreality:
"This is probably one of the most surreal experiences I have ever had in my life. 10 minutes after the memorial at the Kennedy Center ended and the acoustic version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" came on as people were leaving, I heard people outside of my apartment in DC on their balconies. I ran out to discover this full rainbow over the National Cathedral! It had to have covered the entire city of DC. There is no doubt in my mind that it was from Tim Russert himself."
Well with that official pronouncement, a confirmation from Fox, comments on NBC's discussion boards, some bloggers, and the tagging of photos by various flickr users, yesterday's double striped rainbow officially became Russert's. Below are some of the stunning photographed multicoloured arcs that have doubled as a metaphor for a newsman's godliness to some people, and for the more rational thinking among us, just a natural, daytime light show.

I live in DC and these pics are pure gorgeousness- media ridiculous aside, it's great to see so many cool angles of my city framed by this double rainbow.

I live in Somerset Pa. and since the last of May, we have experienced the beautiful rainbows, single and double, very vibrant, at least 15 times. This is very unusal to see so many. I am 81 years old and have never seen so many rainbows in a 2 month period. Id say a weather change is in the making. Thank you Mrs Juanita Hurst
