New York Post Enticed Retailers With Promise of .02¢ Profits

Rupert Murdoch's New York Post sent out a letter to its newsstand vendors a few days before the .50¢ increase went to effect last month, outlining the new rates and profit margins. According to the memo, the new wholesale rate is .445¢ for the Monday through Saturday edition and .865¢ for the Sunday paper. The letter of encouragement notes the potential windfall for retailers: "This means your profit will be increased by .02¢ a copy for the Monday through Friday Late City Final edition of the paper."
