Windstorm Carnage In Manhattan

tree_down_east_village.JPG Tree down, Avenue A and 3rd Street

The brief thunderstorm that swept into the NYC area last night and knocked out the sweltering heat wave didn't last long, but still left a reasonable trail of destruction. A tree swallowed a Jeep in the East Village, debris flew off One Madison Park—which happens to have a huge crane attached to it—leading police to close down 23rd Street between Madison and 5th Avenue. Scaffolding was also reportedly collapsing all over and a strip of Broadway under construction looked like a war zone. See more of nature's handiwork after the jump.

A tree cracked on Avenue and East 3rd street almost crushing this Jeep:

Debris flew off One Madison Park, an under construction high rise with a massive crane attached. Amazingly it didn't even topple over.
