NYC Offloading Trees This Weekend

03.16.12 Bucky Turco

Beginning tomorrow, “New York City will start giving away trees” reports the New York Times. They’ll be offered on a first-come, first-served basis and there’s currently a few variaties available: “Winter King Southern Hawthorne,” “Southern Magnolia Bracken’s Brown Beauty,” “Crape Myrtle Pink Velour,” and “Heritage River Birch.” There’s only one tree per customer, plus some other rules:

Trees may only be planted on private properties such as front and backyards, commercial properties, community gardens and faith-based centers. You cannot plant these trees as street trees. Trees must be planted in the ground, rather than on a roof or in a planter or container. All MillionTreesNYC Community Tree Giveaway trees must be planted within the five boroughs of New York City.
